Municipal water management is key when it comes to providing core public services. Local residents take it for granted that they have a 24/7 supply of drinking water. And so they should, of course. It is an indisputable fact, however, that a local authority can only guarantee drinking water supplies and wastewater treatment if it has a water management system that works perfectly.
Here at REMONDIS Aqua, we can help you make sure that this is precisely what you have. We operate according to the motto: everything’s possible but nothing’s a must. If you wish, we can deliver the complete range of technical and commercial services. For example, as a public private partnership. If your primary aim is to be supported in a number of individual areas, for instance in operations or planning, then we can adapt our services to meet your exact requirements. We expect our advice to be completely transparent – just like water really.

Schwerin is the capital city of the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and is home to around 98,000 people. With so many lakes within its borders, water has played a major role throughout the whole of this city’s almost 1,000-year history. Just as is the case with so many other towns, Schwerin finds itself facing a whole number of water management challenges, in particular when it comes to conserving resources.
Our work
Wasserversorgungs- und Abwasserentsorgungsgesellschaft Schwerin mbH (WAG) has been responsible for supplying water to Schwerin’s residents since 2003. This company is a joint venture between the city’s utilities company, Stadtwerke Schwerin (51%) and EURAWASSER (49%), a REMONDIS Aqua subsidiary. WAG is also responsible for running Schweriner Abwasserentsorgung (SAE), a firm owned by the City of Schwerin that is in charge of wastewater treatment. This includes maintaining one of the largest sewage treatment plants in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, which not only processes wastewater from the capital but also from many of the surrounding districts.

Located in the German region of South Westphalia, ENERVIE – Südwestfalen Energie und Wasser AG is a group of companies owned by Mark-E Aktiengesellschaft and Stadtwerke Lüdenscheid GmbH (a utilities firm). One of its tasks includes supplying the town of Hagen and parts of the Märkischer District with water. The ENERVIE Group operates three waterworks (Lüdenscheid-Treckinghausen, Hagen-Hengstey and Hagen-Haspe) and two dams (Hagen-Haspe and the Jubachtal Dam via Wasserbeschaffungsverband Lüdenscheid). Moreover, it also runs the pumped storage power plant in Finnentrop-Rönkhausen and three river hydro energy plants in Werdohl-Wilhelmsthal, Werdohl-Bockeloh and Plettenberg-Siesel.
Our work
REMONDIS Aqua owns a 19.06% share in the ENERVIE Group and is involved in maintaining and operating the group’s water-related plants and facilities. The services provided in the region as a result of this investment in the ENERVIE Group, however, are just a small part of the public sector collaborations with the group. The company also has an extensive cooperation agreement with the City of Hagen that sees it delivering the full range of core public sector services – from water, to waste management and public transport, all the way through to electricity, gas and district heat.

LWG is the leading business in the Lausitz region when it comes to water and wastewater. Together with its team of around 180 qualified staff, the company ensures that the region has high-quality drinking water supplies and wastewater treatment. It also offers an extensive range of services for industrial businesses, local authorities and private individuals. This also includes carrying out remediation work in regions impacted by past mining activities. All in all, LWG is in charge of eight waterworks and nine sewage treatment plants and is responsible for supplying drinking water to 125,000 local inhabitants living in Cottbus and the surrounding area.
Our work
REMONDIS Aqua owns a 28.9% share in LWG via its subsidiary EURAWASSER and is in charge of managing its technical and commercial operations as well as a number of other tasks. These include, for example, planning and realising renovation measures and new investments. All in all, we are responsible for ensuring that the wastewater generated in Cottbus and the surrounding areas is treated and cleaned professionally so that it can be returned to the water cycle. The same is true when it comes to delivering a reliable supply of high quality drinking water. We also make the most of our know-how to support local authorities and their local residents. What’s more, we are actively involved in research work and collaborate with universities, hospitals and other institutions on a whole variety of projects. For instance, our long-term collaboration with the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg where we are researching, for example, the use of drones to detect burst pipes and monitor sewer pipes.

Germany’s Lausitz region covers an area of 13,000km2 and stretches across the south east of Brandenburg and parts of east Saxony. Based in the south Brandenburg town of Senftenberg, Wasserverband Lausitz (WAL) is responsible for supplying drinking water and treating wastewater for a variety of towns and districts situated in the region. The water rates and charges have remained stable for almost a quarter of a century now despite the structural changes the region has been going through and the effects of a declining population.
Our work
In 2006, Wasserverband Lausitz (WAL) commissioned REMONDIS Aqua to manage both the commercial and technical aspects of its drinking water supply and wastewater treatment operations. In the same year, Wasserverband Lausitz Betriebsführungs GmbH took over around 130 of WAL’s employees and has been responsible for carrying out this work in the region since then. We not only supply high quality drinking water to the local residents in the water board's region but also to thousands of other local inhabitants living in neighbouring water board regions and districts. One of Europe’s most modern dairy businesses – a company based closed to Dresden – also gets its drinking water from the Lausitzer Heide. One of the reasons why we are able to supply so many people across such a large area can be put down to the Tettau Waterworks, the largest waterworks in the state of Brandenburg. What’s more, WAL is also responsible for managing the wastewater there – for example by operating a large number of biological sewage treatment plants across the water board's region to safely treat the wastewater generated by households, commercial businesses and industrial firms.

The Catalonian water association (ACA) is a public company owned by the Catalonian government and is responsible for planning and managing water resources in line with the principles of the Water Framework Directive.
Our work
Our collaboration work with ACA began with a project to set up the plants, sewer networks and pumping stations required to transport water from the various city centres to the treatment facilities. When the last facility was completed in 2022, REMONDIS Aqua then signed an agreement with ACA to operate and maintain the 18 sewage treatment plants and eleven pumping stations. The contract term: 15 years.
The process
Added together, this network of wastewater treatment plants and facilities handles around 4,000m3 of wastewater a day. Their work also includes eliminating organic substances and nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus). Different treatment processes are used depending on the type of wastewater that needs to be treated and the required wastewater discharge values. These include preliminary clarification, biological treatment with bacteria (biodiscs) and activated sludge treatment (low levels of pollutants). In order to optimise the use of resources, the sludge generated by the treatment processes is collected in the smaller facilities and then taken to a central plant for dewatering. The recovered sludge is then transformed into compost at a nearby plant. The treated water is discharged into the Llobregat River.

The region around the Australian City of Gladstone with its 62,000 inhabitants has very much been shaped by industry and is home to many heavy industry companies and transport businesses. Gladstone Regional Council is responsible for water management across its catchment area and operates several wastewater treatment plants. In 2021, it decided to commission REMONDIS Aqua to operate and maintain these two wastewater treatment plants as well as to make the most of its water processing expertise at the same time.
Our work
This operations and maintenance agreement also covers providing day-to-day services, carrying out scheduled and unscheduled repairs, providing assistance in emergencies and giving the council general environmental support. Furthermore, the collaboration work focuses on modernising and professionally servicing the wastewater treatment plants in order to extend their operating life and sustainably cut costs. The wastewater treatment plants have a membrane bio reactor and a stand-alone water recycling facility. This water recycling facility enables wastewater to be recycled in line with statutory regulations so that it can be reused for applications with particularly stringent requirements. This particular process ensures that all contaminated substances are removed – for example sludge that may contain invasive weeds and pose a threat to the region’s fauna.
